Man fatally pinned at Montreal St. Patrick's Day parade

A 20-year-old man has died from his injuries after he was pinned under a float at the St. Patrick's Day parade in Montreal.

Police say he was killed after he jumped from a flatbed truck around 2:15 p.m.

Witnesses say he had been riding on the Marianopolis College float. But there are contradicting witness statements about exactly what happened.

Daniel Lacoursiere, a spokesman from the Montreal police department, said the victim leapt from the truck as it stopped during the procession.

It is believed the man then lost his footing on the ground and became trapped when the vehicle began moving again.

Montreal police Const. Anie Lemieux said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"The information we have is that at one point, he was on the float. It's very early in the investigation to figure out how all this happened. There are a whole bunch of possibilities."

However, police did confirm Sunday evening that alcohol was a factor in the death. The victim is from Laval, Que., and was among two male spectators who jumped onto the float during the parade.

The accident occurred as the men leapt from the float.

Police say the other male is in shock, but that he will be questioned about the incident.

The accident darkened an otherwise festive day, as thousands of locals had poured onto the streets to celebrate the parade, which is in its 186th year.

The parade started at noon and the route ran east along Ste. Catherine Street in the city's downtown.

Police quickly cordoned off the area and moved people away from the scene.

"I saw a person fall off, and I saw (the truck) go over, go up and then down," witness Elizabeth Steinberg told CTV Montreal.

"I saw a hand -- that was it. I was yelling 'Stop the truck! Stop the truck!' I'm shaking right now."

During the 2002 parade, a university student was pinned down by a truck and he sustained serious leg injuries. That year's parade had to be stopped because of the incident.

Hudson 'miracle' pilot gets applause on Broadway
Escorts Montreal reports: Weeks after starring in his own story of bravery and heroism, the pilot who safely ditched his jetliner in the Hudson River received a standing ovation Saturday from the audience at a Broadway performance of "South Pacific."

Many in the audience already had recognized him. Murmurs of "look who's here" had buzzed through the crowd during intermission.

"It was quite exciting just to see this guy who saved so many lives," said David Feldman, who found himself sitting two rows behind the pilot.

"It's so nice to have a hero who's a real hero, instead of movie stars," added Feldman's wife, Ellen Schwartz.

The 58-year-old pilot, his wife and their two daughters went backstage after the show and met the cast of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which tells of the romances and heroics of a group of American aviators, nurses and sailors stationed far from home during World War II.

It was an appropriate choice for Sullenberger, who was named best aviator in his Air Force Academy class and served in the military from 1973 to 1980. He flew F-4 Phantom II fighter planes and served as a flight leader in Europe and the Pacific.

The calm and steadiness with which he handled the Jan. 15 near-disaster — witnesses said he walked the length of the waterlogged plane to make sure everyone got out — could have fit right in with the feats depicted on the Lincoln Center Theater stage. A propeller plane even forms part of the show's set.

Sullenberger and his fellow crew members are in New York as part of a media blitz, including an interview with the pilot that is set to air Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes." He also is expected to appear Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and CBS's "The Early Show" and to receive a key to the city from Mayor Michael Bloomberg later in the day.

A former fighter pilot was hailed as the Hero of the Hudson Thursday night after he landed a stricken US Airways jet in the river - and made sure everybody got out alive.

Pilot Chesley Sullenberger was still drying off when Mayor Bloomberg sang his praises.

"He did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river" and evacuating the passengers, Bloomberg said of the veteran pilot who lives near San Francisco.

With water seeping into the plane - and all his 150 passengers and four other crew members safe - Sullenberger walked up and down the center aisle twice to make sure nobody was left before he, too, fled the jet, the mayor said.

"He was the last one off the plane," Bloomberg said.

Gov. Paterson also praised the ferry boat operators and rescue workers who rushed over as the plane bobbed in the 40-degree water and plucked the frigid, frightened passengers off the wings.

"We've had a miracle on the Hudson," Paterson said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said everybody was accounted for - a group that included at least one baby and a passenger who lost a relative in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Passengers described the scene moments after the plane hit the water as "organized chaos." Yet, there was little panic as they helped each other reach the exit - allowing women and children to go first.

"It's just incredible right now that everybody's still alive," passenger Alberto Panero said.

"It was intense, it was intense," added another passenger, Jeff Kolodjay. "You've got to give it to the pilot. He made a hell of a landing."

It was just 20 degrees at the time and shivering survivors were rushed to Roosevelt Hospital and other medical centers to be treated for exposure. Most were expected to be released.

Meanwhile, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were inspecting the 9-year-old Airbus A320, which was towed to Battery Park City and moored to a bulkhead just north of the World Financial Center.

Sullenberger, a 57-year-old former Air Force fighter pilot and a 29-year veteran of US Airways, told air traffic controllers he hit a flock of geese and that it knocked out both of his engines.

It appeared to be the first time in 45 years that a major aircraft crash-landed in the water - and every passenger on board made it out alive.

Former Airbus executive George Hamlin said the pilot deserves a big thank you from the city.

"Ditching an aircraft is a significant accomplishment on the part of the pilot, as opposed to crashing one," he said. "There's no place for an airplane of that size to land in Manhattan."

2,700-year-old marijuana found in tomb

OTTAWA - Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly "cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

"To our knowledge, these investigations provide the oldest documentation of cannabis as a pharmacologically active agent," says the newly published paper, whose lead author was American neurologist Dr. Ethan B. Russo.

Remnants of cannabis have been found in ancient Egypt and other sites, and the substance has been referred to by authors such as the Greek historian Herodotus. But the tomb stash is the oldest so far that could be thoroughly tested for its properties.

The 18 researchers, most of them based in China, subjected the cannabis to a battery of tests, including carbon dating and genetic analysis. Scientists also tried to germinate 100 of the seeds found in the cache, without success.

The marijuana was found to have a relatively high content of THC, the main active ingredient in cannabis, but the sample was too old to determine a precise percentage.

Researchers also could not determine whether the cannabis was smoked or ingested, as there were no pipes or other clues in the tomb of the shaman, who was about 45 years old.

The large cache was contained in a leather basket and in a wooden bowl, and was likely meant to be used by the shaman in the afterlife.

"This materially is unequivocally cannabis, and no material has previously had this degree of analysis possible," Russo said in an interview from Missoula, Mont.

"It was common practice in burials to provide materials needed for the afterlife. No hemp or seeds were provided for fabric or food. Rather, cannabis as medicine or for visionary purposes was supplied."

The tomb also contained bridles, archery equipment and a harp, confirming the man's high social standing.

Russo is a full-time consultant with GW Pharmaceuticals, which makes Sativex, a cannabis-based medicine approved in Canada for pain linked to multiple sclerosis and cancer.

The company operates a cannabis-testing laboratory at a secret location in southern England to monitor crop quality for producing Sativex, and allowed Russo use of the facility for tests on 11 grams of the tomb cannabis.

Researchers needed about 10 months to cut red tape barring the transfer of the cannabis to England from China, Russo said.

The inter-disciplinary study was published this week by the British-based botany journal, which uses independent reviewers to ensure the accuracy and objectivity of all submitted papers.

The substance has been found in two of the 500 Gushi tombs excavated so far in northwestern China, indicating that cannabis was either restricted for use by a few individuals or was administered as a medicine to others through shamans, Russo said.

"It certainly does indicate that cannabis has been used by man for a variety of purposes for thousands of years."

Russo, who had a neurology practice for 20 years, has previously published studies examining the history of cannabis.

"I hope we can avoid some of the political liabilities of the issue," he said, referring to his latest paper.

The region of China where the tomb is located, Xinjiang, is considered an original source of many cannabis strains worldwide.

Kurylenko was raised by her mother and grandmother in Berdyansk, and they were quite poor. Hers is a true rags-to-riches story, although it certainly doesn’t involve intellectual poverty in any way. Kurylenko’s mother was a teacher and her grandmother a doctor, and the former model becomes animated when speaking about them.

“A teacher and a doctor — the two most important professions in the world,” she says. “They were educated and very intelligent, and that’s all good, but when you cannot eat ...” She shrugs. She explains that her grandmother is dead now, and pauses for a second to regain her composure.

Kurylenko was 13 when she and her mother took a trip to Moscow, where an agent who saw her step off the subway immediately approached her with modelling work. By age 17 she was living and working in Paris. At 18 she was a major success story, appearing on such magazine covers as Glamour, Elle and Marie Claire. She was also the face of various cosmetic and fashion lines.

Kurylenko studied acting while earning a living as a model. Her feature-film debut came in 2005 with L’Annulaire. She won roles in Paris, je t’aime, Le Serpent and Hitman (which was her first English-speaking role), and she has roles in Max Payne — in theatres now — and the upcoming Tyranny. Scripts come to her in French and English.

Since her appearance is so extraordinary, Kurylenko is more or less accustomed to being mistaken for just another pretty face. That doesn’t mean she likes it.

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer," Obama said at a victory rally before more than 100,000 supporters in Chicago's Grant Park.

Obama scored a decisive win the in the electoral vote, the state-by-state tally that determines the winner. Needing 270 votes to claim the presidency, Obama had 349 to McCain's 147, with three states still too close to call. By comparison, Bush won the White House twice, and never tallied more than 286 electoral votes.

The largely symbolic popular vote was much closer: Obama had 51.7 percent to 47 percent with 84 percent of all precincts tallied.

Voter turnout, still being counted, was expected to shatter records. The race was the most riveting in memory, and certainly the longest and most expensive. Obama and McCain had been on the campaign train for almost two years.

McCain called his former rival to concede defeat _ and mark the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House.

"This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and the special pride that must be theirs tonight," McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona. "These are difficult times for our country. And I pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face."

Bush added his congratulations from the White House and promised a smooth transition. "What an awesome night for you," he told Obama shortly after the race was decided.

An Obama presidency offers the prospect of a new style and tone in American foreign policy.

Obama has said he will try to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq in 16 months and has called for a new opening to U.S. adversaries, such as Iran and Cuba. He has urged the closing of the Guantanamo Bay prison and favors cap-and-trade systems to reduce global warming.

Montreal — Nicolo Rizzuto, the 84-year-old patriarch of one of Canada's most infamous crime families, is free to walk out from jail only two years after his highly publicized arrest.

A Quebec judge this morning accepted the joint suggestion of Crown and defence lawyers in agreeing to a four-year jail sentence for Mr. Rizzuto. But his two years spent in jail since his 2006 arrest count as double, meaning he is now a free man.

Mr. Rizzuto and five other men, alleged leaders in the Montreal Mafia, pleaded guilty last month to a raft of charges resulting from a lengthy police investigation.

The father of Vito Rizzuto, the reputed to head the Montreal Mafia, the elder Rizzuto was described as being in poor health and, despite his reputation, for having a minor role in the criminal organization.

Nicolo Rizzuto will have to report to a probation officer, and remains on probation for three years.

Four other leader in the Montreal underworld were handed sentences today of up to 15 years. All will serve no more than 11 years, however, due to their time already spent behind bars.

A fifth man returns to court next month.

The other men are Rocco Sollecito, Paolo Renda, Francesco Arcadi, Francesco Del Balso and Lorenzo Giordano.

During a four-year investigation, the RCMP penetrated the heart of the criminal organization, installing hidden cameras inside their headquarters.

According to RCMP affidavits, hundreds of kilos of cocaine were imported through Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, where baggage handlers, food-services employee and even customs agents were on the gang's payroll.

The allegations are outlined among more than 1,000 criminal counts filed in November 2006 against 90 people the police identified as associates and underlings of Vito Rizzuto.

The four-year investigation by several police forces culminated in a 700-officer raid in November 2006 across Quebec, as well as Halifax and Toronto where more than 70 people were arrested and homes and bank accounts were seized. About $3-million was also seized as proceeds of crime.

At the time the RCMP said police struck at the heart of one of the top criminal syndicates in Canada.

Police say the criminal organization had succeeded in infiltrating Montreal's airport and co-opting a dozen airport employees as well as a federal customs agent.

Mitchell Janhevich couldn't believe what he was seeing. Inside a noisy hotspot called The Joy Club one evening in May, 2003, the Montreal beat cop spotted – amidst the frenzy of lights and sound – five men huddled together in a VIP section. He immediately recognized one of them as Vito Rizzuto, who seemed engaged in a sort of gangster get-together. When Rizzuto and his friends left the club and climbed into a Mercedes Benz, Janhevich followed them in his cruiser and eventually pulled them over.

As Janhevich approached the Mercedes, a heated verbal exchange broke out between the passengers and the police officer. Soon, Rizzuto lost his temper, clambered from the car and stalked over to Janhevich. A tall man with hawkish features, Rizzuto confronted Janhevich and demanded: "Do you have any idea who I am?"

Rizzuto, one of Canada's most successful gangsters. "Teflon Don": Montreal mafia kingpin
Janhevich knew perfectly well who Vito Rizzuto is, although most Canadians would be hard-pressed to place the name. Which is surprising, given that Rizzuto is considered the "Teflon Don" of Canada, due to his success in evading conviction during the more than two decades he reigned over Montreal's underworld. In fact, Victor "Vito" Rizzuto is fairly unique in how he successfully merged old-world Sicilian Cosa Nostra sensibilities with modern-day management methods in creating and running his crime family.
Debonair, charming, with trademark swept-back iron hair, the 60 year-old Rizzuto has a healthy appetite for beautiful women, sports cars, mansions, golf and haute cuisine. He is one of the most successful gangsters this country has ever produced and, were it not for the fallibility of the dons of the American mafia, he would likely be a free man to this day.

Born into a prominant Sicilian mafia family
Rizzuto was bred to be a mafia prince. Born in 1946 in Cattolica Eraclea, a small village of 6,000 in the mountainous province of Agrigento in Sicily, Rizzuto is the oldest son of Nicolo "Nick" Rizzuto, a true "man of honour" – the stony-eyed hard cases who belong to the Sicilian Mafia.

When Vito was eight he and his family came to Canada, settling in Montreal, part of a wave of Sicilian mafioso who emigrated to this country in the 1950s and would shape the criminal underworld for decades to come. In those days, the New York-based Bonanno crime family considered Montreal part of its territory, largely because of the convenience of the city's port for offloading heroin shipments from Europe.

'Mafia Row' in Montreal - where the Rizzuto family home is located. Nick Rizzuto joined the Bonanno organization, running a tough crew of Sicilian gangsters and establishing himself as an up-and-comer in the Canadian mob. As he came of age, Vito followed in his father's footsteps. He became a Canadian citizen in 1966 and married Giovanna Cammelleri in a classic mob-style wedding ceremony attended by Montreal's gangster gentry. Two years later, the 22 year-old Rizzuto was arrested after he and his brother-in-law burned down a barbershop for insurance money – his only conviction ever. He was in jail for only a few months.

By the '70s, the Rizzutos and other Sicilians were at odds with the leadership of the Bonanno's Montreal organization, then headed by the volatile Calabrian, Paolo Violi. Finally, one night in 1978, the Rizzutos' problem was solved: Violi was shot in the back of the head as he sat down for a meal at a Montreal restaurant. His grisly slaying ushered in the Rizzuto era.

A mafia-style shooting in New York
Vito's true mafia baptism occurred in 1981 when a factional tug-of-war within the Bonnano family in New York led to the decision to murder three dissident captains. A request went out to Montreal for hit men, and Vito was dispatched as a shooter. On the night of May 5, 1981, the three mob captains showed up at a hangout in Brooklyn, where gunmen immediately jumped out of a closet and opened fire. The first person charging from the closet was Vito Rizzuto.

He moved into a palatial house on a street called "Mafia Row", due to the fact its occupants are mostly mobsters and their relatives. His house is 4,300 square metres, with his father living in a similar spread next door.

Vito established his presence in loan-sharking, gambling, drug smuggling, and money-laundering. He formed alliances with other Italian-based crime families, along with the Hell's Angels, Montreal's West End Gang and South American cartels.

The glamorous - and dangerous - world of a gangster
Vito's routine was to rise at eleven o'clock every morning and go to the Cosenza bar, a social club the family runs on Jarry St. East, about thirty kilometers from their home. He is an avid golfer and could often be found on the links around Montreal. He drove upscale cars, including Lincolns, Mercedes, Jaguars and Corvettes. He owns resort property in Mexico and always traveled with bodyguards outside of Montreal.

Yet police had little success curbing his operations. In the '80s, Rizzuto was arrested twice for importing hash, but got off both times when a witness changed his story and wiretaps used by police were deemed illegal.

Joe Pistone, an FBI plant in the Bonnano crime family, says violence is part of life for any mafia member. Vito Rizzuto's world is a violent one. In 1992, for example, Giuseppe Lopresti, a neighbor of Vito's in Mafia Row and one of his closest associates, was found in a vacant lot, murdered, his body wrapped in a canvas sheet. He had been shot in the head, apparently because he'd run afoul of the New York mob. In 1997, Hamilton mobster Johnny "Pops" Papalia and his right-hand man were murdered. Papalia's death allowed Rizzuto to extend his reach into Ontario.

New York mafia connection turns on Rizzuto
By the 1990s, Vito's organization was so powerful it was considered stronger than most of New York's five Cosa Nostra families. But, his fall from this pinnacle was due to the treachery of his American partners-in-crime in the Bonanno family. The FBI had waged a relentless war against the New York mafia and in 2001, they targeted the Bonanno family and its cunning boss, Joey Massino. Their efforts to break the family paid off when Massino's right-hand man, Salvatore Vitale, agreed to co-operate. Vitale fingered Rizzuto as among the shooters in the 1981 killing of the three dissident Bonanno captains. Consequently, on the early morning of January 20, 2004, Vito was arrested at his home in Montreal.

In August, 2006, after Rizzuto's many appeals were exhausted, the Montreal mobster was finally deported from his prison cell in Quebec to New York where he now awaits trial. His father Nick, meanwhile, is still alive and residing in Montreal, although who will oversee the Rizzuto organization remains uncertain.

While investigating a series of murders, he befriends a young woman who is out to avenge her sister’s death. The original third person shooter videogame had close allusions to film with cinematic story sequences and noir-style night and rain devouring every moment. However, the main appeal of Max Payne was the ability to shoot the bad guys in the same "bullet time" style seen in The Matrix while leaping between crates or through doorways – a simple gimmick which was stretched over two games. Controlling Max around mainly enclosed spaces, killing everything that moved with the ease of slow motion became famous for its novelty factor when bullet time was still creating a buzz and The Matrix sequels were being anticipated rather than lambasted. In bringing the game to screen, the filmmakers will need to work on giving us more than just this borrowed element to make an engrossing film - especially as it’s not clear if this novelty value is being exploited.

The presence of Ludacris and Nelly Furtado, more famed for their music than acting ability, and Chris O’Donnell, normally associated with average studio fare than hits, gives the impression we could be in for a rough ride. Director John Moore’s CV is sketchy: his previous high profile movies such as The Omen, Flight of the Phoenix and Behind Enemy Lines were workmanlike and there’s no getting away from the fact Max Payne is hardly a gaming household name anymore. The film is billed to include enemies from beyond the natural world too, a fantasy element not normally used in classic noir or even more modern day fare such as Sin City.

Max Payne will not be aiming to shoot the bullseye of taste with the average movie fan: it’s most likely to fall into that limbo of gamers wanting to see how their hero has been presented on the big screen and those looking for a simple actioner. If it achieves any more, then it will be considered a huge success for all involved.

Canadian Grand Prix dropped from 2009 calendar

The Canadian Grand Prix, which is held annually in Montreal, has been removed from the 2009 Formula One calendar.

The race, which was first held in Canada in 1967, takes place every summer in Montreal, generating tens of millions in revenue for the city.

Under the terms of the deal, the ten F1 teams that relied on tobacco sponsorship received up to $2 million to race unbranded cars in Montreal.

With the 2009 cancellation, North America will be without a Formula One race for the first time in 43 years.

The U.S. GP was axed from the F1 schedule last year.

LOS ANGELES - Scientists believe NASA's Phoenix Mars lander exposed bits of ice while recently digging a trench in the soil of the Martian arctic, the mission's principal investigator said Thursday.

Crumbs of bright material initially photographed in the trench later vanished, meaning they must have been frozen water that vaporized after being exposed, Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, said in a statement.

"These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice," Smith said. "There had been some question whether the bright material was salt. Salt can't do that."

Phoenix Mars is studying whether the arctic region of the Red Planet could be habitable. The probe is using its robotic arm to dig up soil samples, and scientists hope it will find frozen water.

However, an initial soil sample heated in a science instrument failed to yield evidence of water.

The bright material was seen in the bottom of a trench dubbed "Dodo-Goldilocks" that Phoenix enlarged on June 15. Several of the bright crumbs were gone when the spacecraft looked into the trench again early Thursday, NASA said.

Phoenix's arm, meanwhile, encountered a hard surface while digging another trench Thursday and scientists were hopeful of uncovering an icy layer, the space agency said. That trench is called "Snow White 2."

The arm went into a "holding position" after three attempts to dig further, which is expected when it the reaches a hard surface, NASA said.

Scientists have been using names from fairy tales and mythology to designate geologic features around Phoenix and the trenches it has been digging.

In 2002, the orbiting Mars Odyssey detected hints of a vast store of ice below the surface of Mars' polar regions. The arctic terrain where Phoenix touched down has polygon shapes in the ground similar to those found in Earth's permafrost regions. The patterns on Earth are caused by seasonal expansion and shrinking of underground ice.

Engineers also have prepared a software patch to send up to Phoenix to fix a problem that surfaced Tuesday in the use of its flash memory. NASA said that because Phoenix generated a large amount of duplicative file-maintenance data that day, the mission team has been avoiding storing science data in the flash memory and is instead transmitting it to Earth at the end of each day.

"We now understand what happened, and we can fix it with a software patch," said Barry Goldstein, the Phoenix project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Montreal Canadiens defenseman Ryan O'Byrne and forward Tom Kostopoulos were arrested outside a Tampa nightclub early Monday morning, according to the Tampa Tribune.

The newspaper reported that both players were arrested at about 3 a.m. (et) outside a bar. Police said O'Byrne swiped a woman's purse and Kostopoulos resisted an officer.

O'Byrne told police the purse was his girlfriend's, but authorities said it belonged to another woman. When an officer "asked what her name was, (O'Byrne) could not give a name," the police report stated.

"Several associates, who were identified as National Hockey League players/members, crowded around the officers and police car," the report said. "They were told numerous times to get away from the police car and not to interfere."

O'Byrne was charged with grand theft, and Kostopoulos was charged with resisting an officer without violence. Both players were released on bail.

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears was quietly released from a hospital Wednesday, in stark contrast to the way she came in.

On that day, she had an extensive escort of more than a dozen police officers in cars, on motorcycles and in helicopters, with paparazzi in tow. Her incognito getaway from UCLA Medical Center required no police, said Capt. Sharyn Buck, commander of the North Hollywood police station, which covers the area where Spears' home is located.

"There was no media, no paparazzi, and no need for public safety protection," Buck said.

It apparently didn't take long for the cameras to find her. By late afternoon, a live television feed from a helicopter showed what looked like Spears and at least one other person in a black, late-model Mercedes-Benz coupe as they drove around Los Angeles, trying to evade the paparazzi giving chase.

The troubled singer was hospitalized Jan. 31 and held for a 72-hour evaluation that was originally set to expire Sunday. Her stay was then extended for two weeks, a person close to the pop star told The Associated Press, which may explain why she was able to avoid attention on her way out.

Until Feb. 14, Spears remains under the conservatorship of her father, an arrangement created after a judge determines a person can no longer care for themselves or their personal affairs. James Spears was named her conservator Monday, and he and lawyer Andrew Wallet were made co-conservators of the estate.

As her conservator, Spears' father has been granted access to all of her medical records and authority to determine where Spears lives and who she sees.

Spears, who is in a child custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, was also briefly hospitalized earlier in January after police were called to her home when she refused to return her sons to a Federline bodyguard after a visit. That trip to the hospital occurred amid a swarm of paparazzi.

A restraining order was issued against Britney Spears’ manager after he was accused of drugging her, parading her in front of the paparazzi and cutting her phone lines.

Osama Lutfi, 33, the pop star's sometime companion, guru and manager has been at Spears’s side throughout much of her well-documented public breakdown.

The singer was physically removed from her Los Angeles home last week and detained for psychiatric evaluation for the second time in a month after a series of hysterical episodes.

It emerged last night that Lynne Spears, the singer’s mother, told a Los Angeles court that Mr Lutfi “drugged Britney, he has cut Britney’s home phone lines and removed her cell phone chargers. He yells at her. He claims to control everything - Britney’s business manager, her attorneys and the security guards at the gate.”

After hearing her testimony, the Los Angeles Superior Court ordered Mr Lutfi, who is known as Sam, to cease all contact with the singer and her family. He must remain 250 yards away from the medical centre where Spears is being held, her home and the homes of her parents, siblings and children.

Today Mr Lufti gave an interview to Us magazine admitting he gave Spears medication, but he insisted it was to help her sleep. He described the pills as "magic" and said Spears agreed that they helped her.

He went on to claim Spears had been suffering from bipolar disorder for approximately five years.

"In the depressive episodes, it's all crying. But in the manic episode, there's very little crying or sympathy or compassion. She becomes another person. She becomes somebody that just doesn't care about anybody or anything," he said.

Spears's gradual demise has been closely followed by the world's media and by judges, who awarded custody of her two children to Kevin Federline, her ex-husband, last year.

Lynne Spears, who has had a strained relationship with her daughter, said that in October last year Mr Lutfi had “essentially moved into Britney’s home and has purported to take control of her life, home and finances”.

She described to the court a long chaotic night inside her daughter’s Beverley Hills home in the days before she was put on “mental health evaluation hold”.

To keep Britney quiet Mrs Spears claimed that her manager said he ground up drugs and put them in her food. “He told us that the doctor who is treating her now is trying to get her into a sleep-induced coma so that they could then give her drugs to heal her brain.”

Late that same evening, she said Britney decided she needed to go shopping for lipstick. Before they left the house, she said Mr Lutfi took Britney upstairs and gave her something “to make her more lighthearted, happy and fun.”

Throughout the evening Britney’s mother claims that paparazzi were present in the house and that they were being corralled by Mr Lutfi.

“The paparazzi reported to Sam and addressed him with great respect,” she said. “They treated him like a general.”

In extending her hospital stay, hospital staff members cited a section in the California legal code that allows patients to be retained for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others, the person said.

Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ruled the day after Spears was hospitalised - and following a year of increasingly bizarre public behaviour - that someone should take over the singer's personal and financial affairs.

She named Spears' father, James Spears, as his daughter's conservator and made Spears' father and lawyer Andrew Wallet conservators of the pop star's estate.

Goetz granted the conservator access to all Spears' medical records, as well as the right to restrict her visitors and to provide her with around-the-clock security.

A court creates a conservatorship when it concludes a person no longer can care for themselves or their personal and financial affairs.

Spears has been receiving treatment in the UCLA medical centre, where she was taken on Thursday for a psychiatric evaluation.

It was the second time she had been taken to hospital in less than a month.

MONTREAL - Hockey legend Guy Lafleur was arrested Thursday afternoon, ducking into a police station a day earlier than previously planned to answer a charge of giving contradictory evidence in his son Mark Lafleur's court case.

Lafleur, 56, surrendered to Montreal police at about 3:30 p.m.

He was released without conditions and is to appear at the Montreal courthouse on February 7, his lawyer, Jean-Pierre Rancourt said.

Guy called me about noon and asked if we could arrange to do this sooner because all the media was talking about is that there is an arrest warrant for Guy Lafleur."

The former right-winger for the Habs was not fingerprinted, and his mug shot was not taken, Rancourt said.

"I asked them not to because my client (Guy Lafleur) will be travelling to the United States and I didn't want that to compromise his career."

Lafleur, a five-time Stanley Cup champion, may yet be fingerprinted and photographed, however. The procedure is standard when criminal charges are brought; but it is not always carried out upon arrest.

Rancourt maintained Lafleur is not guilty of the charge. And he said the fact they let Lafleur go without conditions proves they could have simply mailed Lafleur a summons, avoiding a media frenzy since the arrest warrant was issued Wednesday.

Providing contradictory evidence carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

The warrant stated Lafleur testified in September that his son came back to the family's Montreal-area home every night in August while the younger Lafleur was under a court-ordered 12:30 a.m. curfew.

But in testimony he gave in October, Lafleur said his son actually spent two nights at a hotel.

Mark Lafleur, 23, was first arrested last January. He faces 22 charges that include uttering death threats and sexual assault of a 17-year-old.

Mark Lafleur is also accused of kidnapping, forcible confinement, mischief, theft, possession of crack cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana, threatening to kill a Montreal bus driver, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and damaging a bus.

His preliminary hearing is set for March.

LOS ANGELES — With Britney Spears whisked out of the public spotlight Thursday and committed to a hospital psychiatric ward, it's now up to a team of professional caregivers to reverse her seemingly endless downward spiral.

Spears, accompanied by more than a dozen police officers, was taken to the UCLA Medical Center before dawn Thursday in what one officer would only say was an effort to "get help" for the troubled pop star.

It was her second 72-hour commitment in four weeks, though her previous stay lasted less than two days and was followed by more strange episodes that have accompanied her divorce and bruising child custody battle.

The law allows a person to be placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold for up to 72 hours if they are believed to be a danger to themselves or others. Spears' mother, Lynne Spears, was seen leaving the medical center's psychiatric hospital about 5:30 a.m. Asked if her daughter was all right, she replied, "Yeah."

Under the law, doctors may keep an individual under round-the-clock observation but may not medicate the person without his or her permission unless there appears to be grave danger, said Dr. Bruce Spring, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Southern California.

"The hold is not a carte blanche for treatment," said Spring, who is not connected to Spears' case.

Spears' public emotional spiral began in November 2006 when she filed for divorce from Kevin Federline, the father of her infant sons, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston.

Neither Spears' attorney nor Federline's lawyer immediately returned calls for comment on her hospitalization. The pop star's spokeswoman declined to comment.

It was not immediately clear who initiated Spears' commitment process. The latest effort to get her help comes as various people in her life appear to be jockeying for influence, from her immediate family to two men who have recently surfaced.

One, Sam Lutfi, has described himself as Spears' manager and "very good friend." Earlier this week, Barbara Walters said on ABC's "The View" that Lutfi had contacted the veteran newswoman and told her that Spears saw a psychiatrist and "is starting some kind of treatment."

The other is Adnan Ghalib, a paparazzi photographer who recently announced that he is Spears' boyfriend. Soon after that announcement, Ghalib's wife of four years filed for a legal separation.

Ghalib has been seen escorting Spears on shopping excursions, restaurant outings and to court during her ongoing child-custody battle with Federline. He reportedly followed the motorcade to the hospital with Spears' mother.

The pop star was seen arriving in an ambulance, accompanied by the type of escort normally reserved for a president. Nearly a dozen officers on motorcycles, as well as more in police cars and in a pair of helicopters hovering overhead, shepherded her to the hospital.

UCLA spokeswoman Roxanne Moster, citing patient confidentiality laws, declined to say whether Spears was at the hospital Thursday.

Generally, a person on psychiatric hold receives a physical and mental evaluation and undergoes tests that can include X-rays and blood samples. Doctors can also recommend a course of treatment during that time.

If a person is still considered a danger after the initial hold, doctors can extend the confinement to up to 14 more days and a court-ordered hearing is held at the hospital during that time to determine if the person should be let go.

An estimated 40 to 100 people are committed against their will in Los Angeles County every day, Spring said. Most, however, arrive with only an escort of two police officers or a psychiatric mobile response team.

"It's unusual that there would be a parade of people," Spring said of the circus-like atmosphere under which Spears arrived. Her visit drew complaints from neighbors who contacted the Federal Aviation Administration about the helicopters.

Police Capt. Sharyn Buck said some people complained, but the motorcade was provided to get Spears through a paparazzi swarm without endangering her or the public.

"It's not preferential treatment by the LAPD, it's protecting public safety," Buck said.

Because paparazzi photographers trail Spears' every public move, she is forced to conduct almost all of her life in the equivalent of a moving fish bowl. As the world has watched, her behavior has gotten increasingly erratic.

Earlier this week, she was videotaped speaking in a faux British accent as she ordered Lutfi out of the driver's seat of her black Mercedez-Benz, shouting at him, "I want to drive my f------ car."

At other times she has arrived at public events in short skirts and without underwear, shaved her head bald, ran over a photographer's foot, left the scene of a fender bender, flogged another car with an umbrella and abandoned a car in traffic when it had a flat tire. Earlier this week, she was photographed holding her pet dog and crying.

Spears was hospitalized on Jan. 3 after police were called to her home when she refused to return her children to Federline following a visit. That episode resulted in her losing custody of her sons.

As she was about to leave the hospital the first time, Spears was confronted by TV personality "Dr." Phil McGraw, who said he was sent there by her family. At one point, McGraw had planned an episode of the "Dr. Phil" show about Spears, but quickly abandoned the idea amid criticism that he was exploiting her problems. He has since apologized for discussing his visit publicly — but not for going to see her.

Meanwhile, another hearing in Spears' child-custody case was scheduled last week but she didn't attend.

She arrived at the courthouse wearing a short, black party dress, bright pink lipstick, shiny gold platform shoes and sunglasses. But after passing through the courthouse metal detector, she announced, "I want to leave" and returned to her car.

Gina Joy Carano (born April 16, 1982) is an American Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter. Her specialty is Muay Thai Boxing. Carano also appears as the Gladiator "Crush" on the 2008 version of American Gladiators.
Carano was born in Dallas County, Texas, the daughter of Glenn Thomas Carano and Dana Joy Cason. She is a former psychology student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Gina’s father, Glenn Carano played for the Dallas Cowboys as a backup quarterback from 1977-1983 and for the USFL Pittsburgh Maulers as a starter in 1984. A member of the Nevada State Athletic Commission for 5 years, Gina’s father was instrumental in bringing the UFC to Nevada in 2001.

Martial arts career
After racking up a Muay Thai record of 12-1-1, Gina received an offer to participate in the first ever female sanctioned MMA bout in Nevada. She was invited at the World Pro Fighting show in Las Vegas to fight Rosy Sexton from the United Kingdom.[1]

Carano has recently fought on the September 15, 2007, Showtime EliteXC card, defeating Tonya Evinger via rear naked choke for her first career win by submission.

Previously she fought on the February 10, 2007, Showtime EliteXC card, defeating Julie Kedzie via unanimous decision in what was called "the fight of the night"[2]

Her scheduled bout against Jan Finney at the EliteXC/K-1 Dynamite!! USA event on June 2, 2007 was cancelled due to illness. While initial internet rumors cited a possible pregnancy as the real cause, The Fight Network and other organizations have now reported that she was rushed to the hospital via ambulance while attending a World Extreme Cagefighting event as a spectator.[3]

Along with Lisa King, Carano serves as a mentor to aspiring female fighters in the Oxygen reality series Fight Girls.

Carano also appears as the Gladiator "Crush" on the 2008 version of American Gladiators.

Troubled pop singer Britney Spears was released from a Los Angeles hospital following a visit from talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw, gossip website TMZ.com reported Saturday.

Spears was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by ambulance on Thursday after a nearly three-hour police standoff, in which authorities tried to mediate a custody row between the entertainer and her ex-husband Kevin Federline.

"Sources say the hospital released her without notifying any of the principles involved in the ongoing kiddie drama.
The website says McGraw -- a well-known psychologist and author who first gained fame for appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show -- visited Spears early Saturday morning.

The "Dr. Phil Show" is taping a special about Spears on Monday with the show set to air on Wednesday, TMZ reports, adding representatives from the show requested footage of the pop princess from the website.

McGraw issued a statement to Entertainment Tonight regarding his visit with Spears saying:

"My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention. She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her."

Custody battle

Federline was awarded sole custody of their two children, two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James on Friday. Spears' visitation rights were also suspended.

Commissioner Scott Gordon has ordered another custody hearing for Jan. 14.

Federline, who married Spears in October 2004, was awarded temporary custody of their children last fall after Spears defied court orders.

"I'm not happy about any of these events," Federline's attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said after leaving a closed-door emergency hearing Friday afternoon. "There's no winners here."

The bizarre drama unfolded after 7 p.m. on Friday when Spears allegedly refused to turn over her two children to Federline.

Police were called to the pop star's home at 8 p.m. on Thursday to mediate a custody dispute over Spears' two young boys.

By about 10:30 p.m., there were six police cars, two ambulances and a fire truck in the gated-community where Spears' house is located. Throngs of paparazzi descended on the scene as helicopters taped Spears, lying on a gurney, being loaded into an awaiting ambulance.

The 26-year-old turned over her two boys to ex-husband Kevin Federline at 10:50 p.m., confirmed officer Jason Lee, reports The Associated Press.

Lee said Spears was allegedly under the influence of an unknown substance at the time; however, officers later clarified that there was no evidence of substance abuse at the time of the incident.

Spears' life appears to have spiralled out of control since her divorce from Federline in July. Spears was photographed in a number of strange incidents last year including an umbrella attack on a car. After shaving her head, Spears spent a month in a rehab facility and was involved in a number of minor traffic accidents including an incident where she ran over a photographer's foot.

According to new reports, it was the court-appointed monitor that called police when Unfitney began behaving erratically on Thursday.

"She had already put Preston in the car when Britney locked herself in a room with Jayden," a source tells People. "The cops came and got through the door and tied her down to a gurney."

LAPD called the incident an "ongoing investigation."

Sean Preston was taken to the hospital by Federline's assistant, and Jayden James was in the ambulance with the monitor, a source says, adding that the boys "won't be back with [Spears] for a long time."

By all accounts, Britney suffered a severe mental breakdown last night.

“They had to strap her down like a mental patient and she was going between laughing and hysterics,” a source tells Us Weekly, calling it “a total psychotic breakdown. She just went crazy."

Spears and her mother confirmed the pregnancy to OK! magazine, saying she was 12 weeks along and the father is Jamie Lynn's longtime boyfriend Casey Aldridge. Aldridge's mother confirmed it to TMZ.com.

"It was a shock for both of us, so unexpected," Jamie Lynn told OK!, according to the Associated Press. "I was in complete and total shock and so was he."

Aldridge's mother, Joyce Aldridge, told TMZ she was "aware of the recent interview regarding her and being pregnant" and that "we are in agreement with everything that was said by Jamie Lynn."

"Everything is fine," Joyce Aldridge added.

Spears, a high school junior who is 10 years younger than Britney, had until now escaped much of the attention about her personal life that has surrounded her sister.

Jamie Lynn stars as a schoolgirl at the fictitious Pacific Coast Academy in Zoey 101, finishing its third season next month as one of Nickelodeon's highest-rated shows.

Last night turned out to be quite the adventure for Britney Spears and the paparazzi trying to keep tabs on her, finally ending at 2am with a pink-wigged Britney arriving at The Peninsula Hotel.

Things started off with the Piece Of Me singer, who was wearing the same clothes as the previous evening, stopping at a 76 gas station for a pack a smokes.

From there, Britney found time to change into a red dress, once again forgetting her bra. After prettying herself up, the pop tart made her way to Cross Creek for a bite to eat.

Then the fun began. According to an insider on the scene, “After having dinner in Cross Creek, a bra-less Britney Spears sent paparazzi on a wild goose chase following her strange antics from location to location.”

Continuing on, the source tells, “She made not one, but two toilet stops - the first at Walgreens 24-hour pharmacy where she came out holding a video camera, and the second at a gas station where she held her nose until she returned to her car. Her peculiar behavior didn’t stop there - the singer made another spontaneous stop to take pictures of a building before taking refuge in a photographers car.”

Switching up her look once more before arriving at her final stop, Britney showed up at The Peninsula Hotel wearing a leopard print dress complete with ripped fishnet tights and her trademark pink wig - checking in for who knows what!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britney Spears can’t even visit her children now.

The troubled pop star may not see 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James — who are in the custody of Spears’ ex-husband, Kevin Federline — until she complies with a court order, Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon ruled.

The order, dated Wednesday, does not spell out what directives Spears defied. A hearing in the matter was scheduled for Oct. 26.

A message left with Spears’ attorney, Anne Kiley, was not immediately returned.

In the past, Gordon has reprimanded Spears for not complying with other court orders, repeatedly saying that she lost primary custody to Federline due to her own choices.

Among other things, Gordon has ordered her to undergo random weekly drug testing, citing evidence that Spears engaged in “habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol.”

She could not visit with her children without a parenting coach present. The coach participated in the emergency hearing Wednesday. Both parents were ordered to remain sober around their children.

Theron talked with the magazine about growing up on a farm, her political interests and her work, including her latest movie, "In the Valley of Elah," a murder mystery set among U.S. troops newly returned from Iraq.

"I wanted to make the movie precisely because it evades formulas about guilt," the 32-year-old actress said. "I'm drawn to ambiguity."

Theron also candidly discussed her least favourite film, "Reindeer Games."

Lohan has finished and left rehab, after a one month stay at the Utah centre, completing her program to "get clean."

Her mother told People Magazine: I'm proud of her. She's moving ahead with her life. Things were getting out of control and she took action. She took responsibility. She really needed to heal.”

Lindsay returned to rehab a second time after going on a car chase during another drug binge on July 24th.

I hope she has really finally cleaned up and can return to a healthy movie career or make a sex tape, the last thing she has not done. The drug binges and car chases are becoming quite a bore at this point.

David Letterman threw some tough questions at Paris Hilton during her appearance on his show last Friday.

NEW YORK - Paris Hilton missed out on a scheduled “Late Show with David Letterman” appearance earlier this summer in order to serve time in jail for a probation violation. When she finally made it to the late-night talk show this past Friday night, David Letterman didn’t let her forget the reason she missed her original appearance.

After a couple of quick opening questions, Letterman went straight into probing Paris about her visit to the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, Calif., this past June.

“How’d you like being in jail?” he asked.

“Not too much,” Hilton replied.

Letterman carried on with a series of slammer-related questions, including what jail was like.

“Well, obviously it was a very traumatic experience, but I did it. I feel like I can do anything now,” Hilton told Letterman.

As the interview pressed on however, it appeared there was one thing Hilton couldn’t do — tackle more questions about jail. As he jumped in with humorous inquiries about jail food, Hilton began to kick one of her legs and squirmed in the guest seat.

“What would a breakfast be?” Letterman asked.

“Like a hard-boiled egg and an orange,” she said.

“What was dinner usually?” he continued.

“Jail mystery meat.” Paris replied with a smile and more leg kicking. “It was pretty bad.”

As Letterman continued to probe, asking if the experience in jail was “ugly,” Paris quickly noted she wanted to change the subject.

“I’ve moved on with my life so I don’t really want to talk about it anymore,” she said.

Letterman, however, did.

“This is where you and I are different, because (that’s) all I wanna talk about,” he said to the heiress as the studio audience erupted in laughter.

“Have you, did you make any friends while you were in jail?” he continued.

“I’m not answering any more questions about it. I’m here for my clothing line and my movie and my perfume. I’m not here to talk about that. I’m moving on,” she replied.

After a few more uncomfortable minutes, Letterman finally switched subjects and Paris was able to promote her projects, including a new movie she is filming in Toronto — “Repo! The Genetic Opera.”

Spears loses custody of children

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears' legal problems continued Monday when a judge ordered her to surrender custody of her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon ruled that Federline will take custody of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, beginning Wednesday, "until further order of the court."

The order stemmed from an unspecified oral motion made by Federline's attorneys and was handled in a closed-door hearing. The judge's order didn't state the reason for the change in custody and all transcripts of the proceedings were ordered sealed.

Phone messages left for representatives of Spears and Federline were not immediately returned Monday.

Last month, Gordon said Spears engaged in "habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol." He ordered the pop star to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week as part of her ongoing custody dispute with Federline.

Spears also was previously ordered to meet weekly with a "parenting coach" who was to observe and report back to the court about her parenting skills. Both Spears and Federline must complete the court's "Parenting Without Conflict" class.

Spears, 25, and Federline, 29, were wed in October 2004. She filed for divorce last November and it became official in July. The two have joint custody of their sons, but Federline is seeking a greater share of custody.

Since Spears became single, her troubles have played out in the tabloids. First she was photographed at various Hollywood hotspots partying with Paris Hilton. Some photos captured Spears without panties. Then Spears shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and ended up spending a month in rehab.

If convicted, the singer could face up to six months in jail and a US$1,000 fine for each count, said Nick Velasquez, spokesman for the city attorney's office.

Messages left with Spears' lawyers were not immediately returned.

The accident occurred Aug. 6, Velasquez said.

Spears, 25, was filmed by paparazzi that day steering her car into another vehicle as she tried to turn into a spot in a Studio City parking lot. After assessing the damage to her own car only, she was shown on paparazzi video walking away.

Three days after the accident, the owner of the other vehicle filed a police report, and investigators later determined that Spears does not have a license, officials said.

Spears was scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 10, but she is not required to appear.

In a statement issued Monday evening, The Firm announced:
